Labor Day Weekend trip

September 3rd - 7th, 2026

We will have a multi-day trip over Labor Day Weekend in the Creede area. This will be a unified event as the trails that are planned are suitable for both groups.

If you want to caravan with the group over to the campground on Thursday, September 3rd, we will be meeting at the South Safeway parking lot (6520 South Academy Blvd.) at 9:30 AM.

We plan to camp 4 nights at the Thirtymile Campground along the Rio Grande River. This will be a somewhat central location of the planned trails so it should be convenient. If you have not yet reserved a campsite, we suggest you do so soon.

On Friday, Sept. 4th, we will be going East of Creede to the Wheeler Geologic area. This is one of the most unique places in Colorado. This site was the State of Colorado's first National Monument, called the Wheeler Monument. But since the 1950's the road and site was turned over the the Forest Service. At the end of the 4x4 route, there is a 0.75 mile hike to the overlook of the geologic formations which are tall spires of dirt and rock.

On Saturday, Sept. 5th, we plan to go up to Bristol Head, which is an amazing high bluff above Santa Maria Reservoir. The views here are spectacular right from the cliff edge.

On Sunday, Sept. 6th, we will travel up Stony Pass (which starts right from the campground). There may be an oppurtunity to do the Kite Lake trail as well.

Depending on how the timing works out, there may be an option one of these days to also go see part of the Bachelor Loop or even a mine tour North of Creede.

The trip leaders will be Kirk, Sam, Doug and Allen.

If you have questions about this trip, please contact Kirk.
