Metberry Gulch Trip Report 2008
The day for this first official trip of the 2008 year was absolutely beautiful. We had four new people come along on the trip that joined today because they could not be at the Annual Kickoff last Saturday. We had a total of 22 vehicles go with us.
Denny Hage led the trip and Bob Robson took the tail position to help keep us all together. We encountered quite a bit of snow from our big snowstorm of just 3 days ago, but the warm days in between had it melting quite fast. Therefore, the mud and the puddles were awesome. Our vehicles were soon covered with mud until you could hardly tell what color they were. We made it without any major mishaps all the way down Chicken Scratch hill and over the steep granite rock to the bottom at the South Platte River. To our surprise, we encountered another 10 vehicles already at the bottom, eating an early lunch. We found room for all of our club to find parking spots and nestled in for some awesome pictures, showing everyone's parked vehicles plus the other folk, totaling over 30 vehicles, mostly Jeeps of various models.
Many of the other folk began to leave as we all set up to sit on the river bank or in camping type chairs to enjoy our lunch with the awesome view of the river, the trees, the huge rocky cliffs above us, the warm sun, and a light breeze. It seemed as though all of us could have stayed there seemingly forever. But one by one, and then some smaller groups of us, we began to load our vehicles and started back on the return trip home. What a wonderful day of perfect experiences. Some of us headed home to hand wash, and some of us headed for the nearest car wash to give them the headache of trying to find out what color our vehicles used to be.
A GREAT DAY ON THE TRAILS!
