China Wall 2009 Trip Report

TRIP REPORT FOR: MAY 9, 2009 - UNIFIED TRIP TO CHINA WALL

After a delightful breakfast at Four Wheel Parts and a brief meeting to share some updates with everyone, we left with 30 vehicles, and about 70 people.

We headed west to Lake George, took a right on Tarryall Road for about 10 miles to China Wall. After airing down, we began the slow climb up the Wall heading back south. We stopped for a gorgeous view and picture time for all the families and friends at an especially scenic spot with a great overlook. The children really enjoyed the rock garden for a climbing time, and our several dogs liked it too. We continued on through several obstacles that didn't seem to bother anyone too much, but heightened the fun for all of us. There were several opportunities for taking slides and videos. Many spouses jumped out of their vehicles and took pictures of their spouse tackling a given challenge.

Lunch at about noon was at a stop beside the Tarryall River. The children played and skipped rocks on the river, the dogs romped, the adults chatted, stories were exchanged, and then soon it was time to go for the second half of the day. We soon discovered a man, son and grandson, in a Grand Cherokee Jeep who had driven too close to the side of the trail and gotten badly high centered in a very rocky area. He was STUCK BAD! So we winched him back to safety and did some trail repairs that were necessary in order for him to get back home. He was most grateful. He will possibly be back in touch with us as he repeatedly stated his gratitude.

We returned to the trailhead for #204 and took it north to the biggest challenge of the day. This challenge was only for the most daring, and the built up rigs in our group. With some excellent spotting we had possibly as many as a dozen vehicles make it down the obstacle and all but two make it back up with lots of cheering going on for the successful ones. Most of us were then leaving and heading for home by about 3 - 4 p.m.. A great day was had by all.
