Rating 8 - 9

This trail should only be attempted by a modified vehicle with lockers. It is strongly recommended that you not drive this trail in a stock vehicle.

Directions

From Colorado Spring take I25 north to C470 in Denver. Go West on C470 to I70 and take it west to Downievile or Exit 234 which is about 6 miles west of Idaho Springs. From Exit 234 go west on the north frontage road (CR 308) which crosses under I-70. Turn left on Alvarado Rd, cross a bridge, turn left immediately onto the trail going up the hill.

Trail Description

With Spring Creek being so close to Denver it has suffered significantly from all of the traffic it has endured through the years. Just a few years ago Spring Creek could be driven by a capable stock 4WD vehicle but that is no longer the case.

The trail is still very beautiful with many high elevation vistas above I70. If you are traveling with someone who is familiar with the trail they can show you an abandoned mine with the mining equipment still in the cave. Just be very careful as the mine drops off significantly at the point where the mining equipment is located. Be sure to take flash lights with you as it becomes pitch black shortly after entering the mine.

The rock garden which is close to the top of the trail continues to be the signature obstacle of the trail. The bypass around the rock garden is now as difficult as the rock garden was several years ago. The rock garden is now so difficult that it should be attempted by only those vehicles that have been significanlty modified.

There are a couple other obstacles of note - a hundred yard stretch of bowling ball sized rocks, a large rock on a hair pin curve that will require a spotter to assist you, and some significantly sized rocks that are on a left hand curve that will surprise you. There are no bypasses to the obstacles listed in the previous sentence. After this last obstacle you will travel for a significant distance on a nice smooth, tree shaded trail that will lull you to sleep just before you encounter the rock garden.

At the top of the trail is an open meadow that opens to a couple of easy trails. The club usually takes Saxon Mountain Trail back down the hill to Georgetown. The Saxon Trail is really a gravel road with several steep switchbacks. The only concern here is dealing with the vehicles coming up the trail on the hairpin switchbacks and the occasional mud slide area.
